Rockworth Advances Circular Design in Education, Empowering Future Designers Through Real Material Learning at ABAC

Sustainability has become a defining factor in the evolution of the design industry, with Circular Design playing a key role in driving more responsible and resource-efficient practices. This approach emphasizes maximizing the value of materials by reintroducing production offcuts and surplus materials into new creative processes—reducing waste while extending the lifecycle of resources in a systematic way.

Guided by the belief that every material holds inherent value, Rockworth repurposed leftover materials from its production process as a learning resource. These materials were provided to students as the primary brief for designing and developing furniture from real materials—offering hands-on experience that bridges conceptual thinking with practical application, while introducing sustainability principles from the early stages of design education.

This initiative reflects Rockworth’s ongoing commitment to Circular Design by integrating real materials into the learning process. Beyond enhancing practical understanding, the project encourages students to explore new perspectives, recognize the value of resources, and understand the role of designers in contributing to more sustainable outcomes. This includes mindful material selection, designing for longevity, and considering long-term environmental impact.
